What Should AI Do on Its Own — and What Needs Approval?

A simple way to set boundaries that make automation useful and accountable.

The promise of AI at work is speed. The concern is what happens when a system acts too quickly on the wrong assumption.

Businesses need both: room for routine work to move forward and a clear place for people to make consequential decisions.

Start with the impact of a mistake

Not every action deserves the same level of oversight.

Summarizing a document is different from sending a customer a contract. Preparing a proposed budget change is different from making the change. Drafting a message is different from publishing it to thousands of people.

The more expensive, public, sensitive, or difficult to reverse an action is, the stronger the case for human review.

Three practical levels of control

Prepare only. AI researches, organizes, and drafts. A person decides what to do next. This is often the safest starting point for new workflows.

Act within defined rules. Low-risk work can proceed when its conditions are explicit, such as organizing documents or producing scheduled internal updates. The team should still be able to inspect what happened.

Request approval. Financial transactions, external communications, permission changes, deletion, and other sensitive actions should go to an authorized person before execution.

The precise boundary depends on your business, industry, and tools.

Make accountability easy to see

Useful controls include clear ownership, access limited to what a task needs, recorded actions, and understandable approval requests.

If an AI teammate cannot access a source or does not have enough information, asking for help is better than filling in the blanks.

Miley is designed around connected tools, configurable access, and review for important actions. She can work alongside your team in Slack, Teams, email, WhatsApp, SMS, and phone, but the responsibility for business decisions remains with people.

Trust is something you build

Start with a workflow that is easy to check. Review the results, adjust instructions, and expand responsibility only when performance is consistent.

The goal is not maximum automation. It is the right amount of independence for the right kind of work.
